Öræfajökull reflecting in the Glacier Lagoon - South Iceland By Skarphéðinn Þráinsson
Öræfajökull (Strato Volcano) reflecting in the Glacier Lagoon at sunrise, south coast Iceland.
Öræjafjökull is extending south of Vatnajökull ice cap, and is the highest mountain in Iceland 2010m. The highest peak is named Hvannadalshnjúkur, and is rather popular by hikers in the spring, when conditions are good. Öræjafjökull is a stratovolcano, shaped like a cone with it’s top cut off. This stratovolcano is believed to the second largest of its’ type in Europe - only Etna on the island of Sicily (Italy) is larger. The diameter of the mountain at its foot is approximately 20 km. It has a base area of almost 400 km² and a volume of 370 km³.
